Head of the Ohio 2010 Recap

On a beautiful fall Saturday that was especially fortunate for the later-than-normal Head of the Ohio, North Catholic Crew started their day with a bronze medal in their first event, the Boys HS/Youth Lightweight 4+. The boys clocked a 15:15.64, and finished behind two boats from the Westerville Junior program from Columbus, OH. Their time was also faster than all of the collegiate lightweight boats entered, and would have been good enough for 4th in the HS/Youth Open event.

We then turned to the girls in the small boats, with all three of our sophomores racing for the first time in a double. While all had good personal races no small boats earned medals, as the 2nd and 3rd place finishes in the Womens Open Lightweight 2x were not medal eligible.

Due to homecoming dance time constraints, and the regatta being slightly behind schedule, the girls lightweight 4+ did not get to race.

Overall, it was an enjoyable and good day for North Catholic Crew. It was great to see some alumni there (especially Chris Bistolas representing the class of 1994!).

This weekend, the team will travel to Columbus for the Speakmon Memorial Regatta, and have entered a Boys 8+, Girls 4+, Boys Lightweight 4+, Girls 2x, and Girls 2-.

It’s that time of year again!

On Saturday, October 2, North Catholic Crew will be hosting the 7th Annual Wine & Cheese Fundraiser at Coach Sands house. All are invited — new parents, past parents, alumni, friends, friends of friends! The festivities will begin at 3pm, and will go until Cindy kicks us out! Stop by whenever you can.

The cost is $50 per couple (or $25 per person, for you grads from other schools). All we ask is to bring a bottle of wine, as we’ll provide all the food. Tell your friends!

Looking forward to great stories, fun and laughter, new and old friends to help support North Catholic Crew’s 20th Season.

Video from Fox Chapel and Hampton Scrimmage

Just wanted to post a few videos from our latest scrimmage with Fox Chapel and Hampton this past Saturday, September 25. We had some good, spirited racing, going about 3000 meters and into some stiff headwind throughout. If anything, it prepared us for what the Head of the Ohio normally is. North Catholic won a few and lost a few as we were racing a variety of JV and lightweight boats against a variety of FC and HHS boats. It’s early, and we’re pretty young (especially with the girls) so we’re encouraged by the progress everyone showed.

Girls 4+ – Nat, Syd, Nikki, Tina, Billie Jo vs. Fox Chapel and Hampton

Boys 4+ -Ryan, Derick, Nick, John and Gordon vs. Fox Chapel (note the red 7 C’s seeing it’s “first” racing action)

If those links don’t work, go to our YouTube channel here to view all our videos.

Next “real” racing action is in TWO weeks at Head of the Ohio. See ya then!

The New Year Has Begun!

Our first official practice was this past Saturday, and at this point, we have 29 student-athletes! The first day consisted of some standard testing – running, erging, and some body weight exercises. And the result: we’ve got some hard work ahead. We also discussed our plans and goals for the year – with some grand ambitions!

If you’re interested in in joining North Catholic Crew, or even just giving it a try, please contact us!

First-year rowers will begin official practice Tuesday, September 7, and there will be a parents meeting for all parents on Saturday, September 11 at the Washington’s Landing Boathouse (directions).

North Catholic Crew’s New Site

I hope you’re enjoying the new nccrew.com. We’re setting things up so that we can really use this a tool for the families involved with the team, and also for those prospective athletes looking to learn more. And we’re not going to forget about the alumni who would like to keep up to date on everything we’re doing.

Much more to come, and we’re all very excited about our 20th year of rowing at North Catholic!
